Inspiration - Problem:

HAI - Hospital Acquired Infections are a major cause of infectious diseases among patient who rely on Intensive Care. Passages, Waiting rooms, Halls are also hosts for suspended microbes. Cleaning a room that has housed  a patient suffering from contagious infection takes time, processes like fumigation take at least 24 - 48 hours. There are high chances of certain areas left uncleaned/ infected. Requires supervision and expert hands. Also it is Labour intensive.  UV Light can do this in lesser time. But exposure is harmful. So low intensity lights are used currently, which takes time.

What it does:

Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation(UVGI) is a disinfection method that uses short-wavelength ultraviolet(UV-C) light to kill or inactivate microorganisms by destroying nucleic acid and disrupting their DNA, leaving them unable to perform vital cellular functions. UV-C Lamps will be mounted on a moveable platform - ROBOT. The robot will also have a both autonomous and manual control mode with necessary camera for feedback. This robot will navigate in areas/ room that require disinfection. In the present scenario, a robot is required is because the high intensity of UV is harmful to human beings if present.

How we built it

We've been building mobile robots for some time now. When we heard about the problem being faced in hospitals, rooms which take time to prepare for the next patient, we realised our existing platform can be converted to do this job. We've now sourced our UV Lamps and done the mounting on the robot. Our algorithms are now ensuring the robots move to every part of the room, stay for sometime and disinfect the space.

Challenges we ran into

Sourcing components since it is lockdown mode, we are facing problems in sourcing components. Working from remote location is a challenge since it is a hardware project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Amidst all these issues, we have been successful in putting together our robot and get it to work. We have considered our home as hospital wards and simulated the environment.  We won second place at hackthecrisis India edition of the Hackathon.  We have a lot of enquiries and support from all around.

What we learned

No matter how hard it is, solving a bigger problem is better than whining.  Like all tough times don't last, this too shall pass.  With commitment, dedication and focus, if we work together we will be able to achieve anything.

What's next for ANSCER Autonomous UV Disinfectant Robot

Our two robots will be ready by the end of this Hackathon. with full features. We would like to prototype first production ready design. conduct demos for hospitals, government and authorities. We would like to see the project finding the light of the day soon.
