Inspiration

When the epidemic happened, some websites were tracking the case numbers. Some websites provided the map. However, those maps do not track changes. They show the current status, but not the changes and patterns. We then thought about producing an epidemic barometer to track the changes and patterns, not only the case numbers but also the impacts.

What it does

Our work covers China, United States, and International Countries.

Compare to other covid19 dashboards, our work did more on mapping and showed more information in addition to regular pandemic numbers.

The mapping technology we used includes space-time barometer, animation map, map matrix, bubble map, multi-layer thematic map, and multi-view interactions.

The barometer calculates the order of how those countries, states, and counties are ranked so that it can show the patterns and the ranking.

Other than the regular pandemic numbers of new cases, total cases, new death, total death, fatality rate, we also brought in ICU beds, medical pressure, the population at age 60+, Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), Hospital Access Quality Index (HAQ), traveled risk, etc. In China, we calculate the cross-city traveled risk, intra-city transmission risk, and city recovery index.

The broadcasting numbers on the top of the page are updated every hour. The map sections are updated every mid-night eastern time.

  2. The pandemic risk barometer at the city level on cross-city traveled risk and intro-city transmission risk.
  3. The city recovery barometer that shows how much the city is recovered. It is evaluated from two angles. One is the migration return to the cities compare to the migration leave the cities before the spring festival. The other one is urban mobility compare to last year at the same time.  The migration-return-to-cities factor is better.
  4. The pandemic risk flow map from other countries to China.
  5. The multi-layer disease mapping at the province and city-level on medical pressure, 10K people diagnosed, fatality rate, new cases, total cases, new death, total death.
  6. Dynamic Bubble Mapping on Total Cases
  7. Trend Curves compare China and International Average on the total cases, recovery rate, and fatality rate. We also did trend-comparisons within China.
  8. Broadcasting numbers of confirmed cases, suspected cases, severe cases, recovered cases and death.

How I built it

The language we use is HTML5 and Java. We used the ZillionInfo GeoAI mapping SDK and API to build this pandemic site. We developed the crawler to collect the pandemic data. We also did some research to collect other health-related data.

Challenges I ran into

We had a hard time dealing with the conflicts between iOS and iFrame. It causes many problems.

What's next for COVID-19 Barometer

Because this site is developed for the public, we are trying to make the contents as easy to understand as possible. We use single variables in all the maps. Our product actually supports multi-variate space-time analytics. It is more scientific but may need some effort to understand. For the next step, in addition to adding more useful information in this dashboard, we also plan to do multi-variate analytics to dig deeper into this pandemic and its impact. We would also move ahead from data mining to decision making, for example, identify the quarantine regions, allocate medical resources, optimize industry chain, etc.
