From the words of Samuel Johnson that “Knowledge is of two kinds. We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information on it.” I realized that, it is not enough for the world to know that COVID-19 (Corona Virus) is currently ravaging the world, it is not enough for the average citizen to keep listening to what this said and what that said about the current global pandemic. But what seems to be important is where and what is the right information, the current state and stat about the pandemic. This is what then inspired me to come up with COVInfo.
What it does
COVInfo is a simple Progressive Web App that automatically sources and synchronizes latest news, live updates & stats about the COVID-19 pandemic. So, COVInfo puts these latest, up to date & live information right in the tips of the users' fingers. User can see information for the whole world and also for some selected countries.
How I built it
Challenges I ran into
One challenge, I ran into is generating the API on the newsapi.org website That is, APIs for the specific aim of this app and for the specific country, I mean news on the COVID-19 only. But I was able to scale through.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Sincerely, I am very proud of this simple and small project, because I was able to start immediately I came across this hackathon on Wednesday, March 26, 2020. I started on Friday and I was able to get it up and running for the world's use on Sunday, so it took me about 45hours to get this done. I am very happy and fulfilled about this, also because this is the very first hackathon where I will be making a submission alone as an individual.
What I learned
I actually learnt several things, but I will quickly point to the fact that I learnt the relationship between using APIs in a secured socket server and an unsecured socket server. It took me sometime to get this truth, but graciously, I got it and it finally worked well.
What's next for COVInfo
Actually, COVInfo is already up and running and I have began to get feedback from user already. Meaning, it's really serving the purpose of serving the world with the latest, up to date and live information on COVID-19. But I still have the mind the add more designs, UIs to the APP. Also, I am still looking forward to getting a domain name for it and also building a native app for it, especially Android & IOS. Not only, integrating APIs for some more countries.
