After researching, we found that the most common way COVID-19 spreads is when people touch their face after touching infected surfaces or other people. Touching one's face is a habit that is difficult to break as it is unconscious. It is a trivial problem that, if solved can drastically reduce the spread of COVID-19 and the need for other protective equipment (e.g. face masks) for the general population.
What it does
A "virtual face shield" embedded into accessories that act as a wearable self-monitor which will make people conscious every time they try to touch their face, reducing the chance of spreading the virus. Accessories such as a necklace and a bracelet will have wireless sensors embedded in them. When the bracelet comes into close proximity to the necklace it will start to vibrate, alerting the user to avoid touching their face.
How I built it
Our hackers have built a working proof of concept using Arduino and XBee Bluetooth Modules. The accessory will light up or vibrate when they come near each other to alert the user of their hands going near their face. It will have a rechargeable battery and can be switched on and off with a button.
Our hustlers have completed a customer discovery to establish the need for this product through surveys and interviews and find individuals that will be interested in buying this product. We now understand our target customers better and can tailor our designs, marketing and price points to accommodate them. They have put together marketing strategies and financial models to prove the viability and feasibility of this product.
Our hipsters have researched where and what health wearables are in high demand to find out the characteristics our target customers favour. Based on this information, they have 3D designed accessories that would appeal to our target customers and use affordable materials in their design to ensure wider accessibility to our product.
Challenges I ran into
Finding a way to reduce the production costs of the product.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Creating a GREAT well-rounded team and complementing each other's strength!
What I learned
Big problems can be solved by tackling a surprisingly trivial aspect that is causing the problem.
