The inspiration behind IDCERT came from a desire to enable learning to be accessed by everyone at any time transcending borders, time zones, physical and circumstantial barriers. Our aim is to sustain digital culture – approaching new internet technologies with the capacity to use them as a critical resource and have them become an indispensable part of the social, professional and economic growth of 21st Century citizens.
The inspiration was to connect everyone across the chain of education to the part that matters most to them in one centralized platform where communication is seamless and inclusive and where no one is left out. The goal is to reduce the digital literacy gap through accredited and certified paths.
What it does
IDCERT is an educational course management and e-learning system that enables educators, content creators, government educational boards, classroom learners, and independent learners to come together at one hub and facilitate educational curricula for anybody at any time and at any place. We work at an international level through partnerships with businesses, public and private bodies, institutions, universities and schools, successful professionals and sector experts.
IDCERT champions key competencies everyone needs for their personal fulfilment and development, active citizenship, social inclusion and employability. Digital competence, one among the key competencies, is the critical know-how of the proper use of Information Technologies to benefit one’s work, personal and leisurely time and communication. All the important skills tested in the certification of these IT competencies are managed in impartial ways through telematic tools, guaranteeing total objectivity.
IDCERT Certification is the tool that makes these digital skills immediately usable in different contexts such as at schools, at universities, and at work, including application processes, placements and further training. Respecting the principle of LifeLong Learning, we develop and implement certification programs around these skills that empower people with aptitudes in:
adapting to the changing circumstances of life, participating actively in social relationships, and being successful in the workforce that is constantly evolving.
How I built it
We built IDCERT as a web application platform starting from development basics and building up from the php and Lavarel programming languages, with RESTFull APIs in php, MySql with Laravel Framework, front-end work in TypeScript with Angular, and design based on Bootstrap. Ubuntu Servers are used with auto scaling on AWS infrastructure as well as S3 & CloudFront for worldwide distributed video streaming. The UI is designed to allow course content to be filtered based on relevance to skill level, accreditation relevance and commitment requirements. Aside from searchable content, educational providers can access their own set up administration and management system where all centralized communication for a course series or individual course can be accessed.
Challenges I ran into
Time investment difficulties in market research for relevant and valuable feedback from within the educational industry, as outsiders and software development experts.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
What I learned
The complexities of designing a singular platform in a manner that meets the diversification of roles and professional practices of managing education. A successful UI experience is one that is built to allow an ease of navigation for all users and educational providers from government or private sectors, across different roles.
What's next for IDCERT - International Digital Certification
Further development for IDCERT will involve getting on board test partners within the private professional and public educational fields but also big corporations that would use this tool for internal training.
In the same way that the industrial revolutions shaped past centuries, the introduction of technology into our daily lives has brought us changes. Personal computers, mobile phones and the Internet have pushed all boundaries, providing new ways of communication and social interaction. Having ‘connected citizens’ is not sufficient, we need educated and informed citizens who are able to use their digital citizenship critically. We must act and intervene urgently within schools and universities, where the structure of our society is being formed. Technical innovation is without a doubt a key factor in bringing about change in our social and economic systems, but if this is not supported by a systematic vision, it will undoubtedly go down in history as a wasted opportunity. A technical innovation can only live up to its potential if the education system, in tandem with the world of work, is able to accept and manage it.
