Inspiration

For this project our team of three decided to address the societal impacts of COVID-19, specifically mental health. The first question we asked ourselves was: what technology could we design that would be useful to address the various mental health challenges that many are faced with due to social distancing?

What it does

We designed an app,Jiji, that promotes virtual social interaction through regular check-ins and empathetic driven prompted questions. This app will allow therapists to check on their clients via a quick emotions based survey utilizing the Geneva Emotion Wheel (GEW). Its sole purpose is to improve mental health care of the individual in a non-threatening and empathy-driven platform.

How I built it

The initial stages of the process was ideating on how we could better improve communication between individuals in a quarantine situation, specifically regarding emotional health.  While diving deeper into the subject, it became apparent that those that needed a way to track & share their emotions the most were those that could not visit their therapists due to the current social distancing restrictions. After we formalized and drafted the mobile app user flows, we utilized Figma, a design and prototyping tool, in order to do mid/high fidelity screens.

Challenges I ran into

HIPAA regulations were a challenge that we had to think about. To comply with HIPAA, we decided that no PPI was being transferred through the app and that accounts would be created utilizing codes to ensure the protection of personal information.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We created a mobile app prototype within a three day timeline that has the opportunity to impact the mental health field and countess others.

What I learned

Virtual communication methods within the mental health space are limited and often impersonal.

What's next for Jiji: A Mental Health App

The next step for this project will be to partner with mobile app developers in order to transfer the files into a mobile application.
