COVID19 crisis is ongoing and it is taking 10s of 1000s of lives. Knowing that our ideas have the potential to save huge numbers of lives during this crisis we came forward to develop ventilator. We won the #hackthecrishindia even which inspired us to move into the Gobal hack.
What it does
We are building a mechanical ventilator system that can help the patients with COVID19 by providing breathing assistance in different modes including positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) and Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) mode. The system will have typical ventilator setting including Pressure, Tidal volume, FiO2 control, pressure alarm etc. PEEP therapy can be effective when used in patients with a diffuse lung disease that results in an acute decrease in functional residual capacity (FRC), which is the volume of gas that remains in the lung at the end of a normal expiration. FRC is determined primarily by the elastic characteristics of the lung and chest wall. BiPAP on the other hand enables control over the pressure during the inhalation and exhalation. We at big bang boom solutions have been able to develop a completely modular, remotely operable and highly scalable ventilator system. We can leverage the power of the consumer durables and auto sectors to scale this cost effective solution and open up our country and the world.
How I built it
We are using industry 4.0 control systems with consumer durable components that are available in plenty. We have developed a prototype with PLC and SCADA that controls various pneumatic systems.
Challenges I ran into
Since the country is still under lockdown, sourcing the material and getting the team together is the most challenging part.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We won the #hackthecrisisindia event on 5th of April, by developing the prototype in less than 40 hours. This we feel as a accomplishment.
What I learned
We learned a lot of new things after we started the project. We figured out a lot of methods to achieve the same thing and chose which is the best one. Working together as a team paved way for lot of knowledge sharing.
What's next for Mechanical Ventilator for COVID-19
We are going to integrate sensors and feedback circuits to make the ventilator field operable. also we will integrate the preset program for different modes of operation.
