The proposer of the project himself experienced lockdown issues and saw a local window poster from someone organizing a self-help local group in whatsapp. He joined the group of 40 local residents and it helped him a lot. Further research showed the WHO predicted a mental health disorders based pandemic following the lockdowns. The disorders are well documented including depression, anxiety; also affecting medical staff. There is now a UK helpline for mental health for medical staff accessible by 1.4 million people.
What it does
Whatsapps groups and similar groups are all private. We propose a discovery service to enable people to find local or professional peers (for medical staff). The service allows local communications and local means local. In the group Trevor joined, the group generated hundreds of messages an hour, hence the groups should be small to avoid flooding.
Also PJ offers searching of messages and can connect to relevant groups which could also assist.
How I built it
We used google maps for location data, mongodb and a nodejs server for rest api calls.
Challenges I ran into
SSL was very hard to handle. The systems takes the location of the user automatically and that needs SSL.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Solving SSL. We had a completely working system in just over one day.
What I learned
I learned a lot more about pem files, SSL and getting them to work.
What's next for PJ
Build a real app using android and roll out to dedicated user groups who might be able to help.
