We were inspired by the growing community of entrepreneurs, healthcare professionals and medical doctors that are coming together to solve challenging problems affecting their communities. We are inspired by the millions of people joining forces and going into quarantine so that their loved ones with frail health could survive. We are inspired by our healthcare heroes spending countless of hours dedicated to the selfless care of hundreds of people.
Our inspiration has driven us to create a dashboard with real-time data of COVID-19 cases and incorporate contact information from healthcare professionals. We have been inspired to connect these professionals with public health officers involved in caring for state-wide populations. We found that there is no centralized source of information for public health officers and general public to contact healthcare professionals who are ready and able to be deployed to areas in need. We see a need for the government to inquire whether these healthcare professionals are ready and able at times of need, such as with COVID-19 pandemia.
What it does
We have created a (dashboard) that supports the efforts from these communities by enabling sharing of information between public health respondents and healthcare professionals. The first version of our dashboard connects public health officers (users) with medical doctors, nurses and dentists practicing in affected communities by the COVID-19 virus. Our dashboard provides a way for public health officers and the general population to see where these healthcare professionals are located. In the not-so distant future, public health responders will be able to provide further information to allow the general public connect via tele-health.
How we built it
For this initial prototype, we obtained the names and mailing and business addresses from physicians, nurses, and dentists. We then created a map that made it easy to visualize where these healthcare professionals are located. We obtained validated data from COVID-19 confirmed cases from January 22 to March 27 (link. We combined data from COVID-19 cases from Harris County with data with information from healthcare professionals.
Challenges we ran into
We haven't been able to connect to the API from John Hopkins. We still don't have all the lists of physicians, nurses and dentists added to the dashboard. We want to create profiles for doctors interested in getting deployed to areas in need.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of having collected data that can help public health officials to connect with healthcare professionals in areas with high incidence of disease. We are proud of having been able to collaborate with Vincatech1 in providing the cybersecurity infrastructure that is required for public health officials to contact with healthcare professionals. We are also proud of our diverse team, including medical doctors, a scientist having interned at the CDC, cybersecurity expert and data analysts.
What we learned
We learned that it is better to try to connect to the API first rather than leave it to the last milestone of the development. We also learned that we need to capture more data from hospitals, including number of beds, ventilators, and masks so that we could also include it as part of the dashboard. We learned that we must have included more lists of physicians, other than respiratory doctors, since the primary doctors will be the ones that will be more critical in getting deployed to the field by the public health officials.
What's next for Real Time Activation of Healthcare Workers to COVID-19 Zones
We plan to improve this prototype by connecting to an API to the data compiled by John Hopkins so that we could populate it in real-time across the whole world. We will then include the names and addresses of physicians across the United States. We plan to create profiles for these physicians so that they could upload when they would be available to take in patients and be deployed by the public health officials to areas in need. Moreover, we hope we can help to identify outbreaks earlier. We will do this by designing a questionnaire inquiring about the COVID-19 early symptoms from send it by email early warning. We also plan to include information from small businesses having access to ventilators, masks, beds, and other equipment required to fulfill the needs of hospitals that sign up to our dashboard. We need to add the profile sign in function and register button to ensure that they can register.
