Inspiration

With the increasing corona epidemic, many countries are currently facing shortage of ventilators. With recent research, many countries have opted for a Y or T pipe for supporting 2-4 patients. The Y-piece has major disadvantage, it cannot compensate for pulmonary compliance difference between patients The epidemic has been proved much fatal than expected. Different country's medical staff need to prioritize the patients. Older patients are allowed to die due to shortage of ventilators. This would prove to be a life saver in the crisis period.

What it does

For controlling the peak pressure and volume flow from the inspiration port, we will be using pressure, volume flow sensor along with flow controller. These total operation will be controlled using a simple micro-controller like Raspberry Pi along with an interactive LCD display. With this controller each patient will be ventilated independentlybased on their pulmonary compliance.

How we built it

A ventilator includes two modes of operation: Volume cycled operation and Pressure Cycled Operation. Pressure Cycled operation is used in case of slitting since it ensures  the limitation of peak pressure. Yet this mode of lack control over tidal volume that is inter patient compliance mismatch. For the compensation of the compliance mismatch we have used pressure flow and volume flow sensors. In this method after splitting from the inspiration input, we will be attaching the sensors for monitoring the oxygen flow. The values from these sensors will then be processed by microcontroller like raspberry pi. The microcontroller would be responsible for monitoring the values and one can get any desired pressure and volume by using an user interactive display. For example, one patient’s tachypnea could cause all patients attached to the ventilator to be hyperventilated in case of traditional splitting. But inclusion of microcontroller will help in detecting the hyper flow and would therefore be able to keep the parameters controlled. So this is how we can attain inter patient compliance mismatch compensation using some sensor and a microcontroller which will allow any number of patient to be ventilated using a single ventilator. The total cost for the implementation would be around 70 dollars for each extra patient.

Challenges we ran into

We have all the architecture of the model ready. The idea was confirmed by a Doctor(MD) who agreed that it could be a solution. We need to work on the implementation using a real ventilator on board for getting the accuracy and efficiency values.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We have no accomplishments since we have not have any values and have tested in real time basis.

What we learned

We learned about the modes of a ventilator and what problems one faces during the usage of ventilator supporting multiple patients.

What's next for VENTILATOR FOR MULTIPLE PATIENTS

The doctors are prioritizing patients upon treatment due to shortage of ventilators. This solution would prove to be a boon for mankind. The epidemic has been proved much fatal than expected. Different country's medical staff need to prioritize the patients. Older patients are allowed to die due to shortage of ventilators. This would prove to be a life saver in the crisis period.
