The COVID-19 pandemic that is currently gripping the globe has every individual concerned about their health, but also about recessionary impacts on the economy. Many understand that the pandemic is hardly good for the economy, but it's also important to understand why. I hope that this project will be helpful for people of all socioeconomic backgrounds.
What it does
The first part of my project is the webpage. News from over 20 sources is summarized and compiled into a single webpage providing a digestible source of meaningful information for readers. The second part of the project is an interactive dashboard. The dashboard visualizes the drastic drops in the stock market and key economic sectors, as well as provides a helpful calculator to summarize payment from the recently passed stimulus bill.
How I built it
Challenges I ran into
I ran into several challenges during my development process. I had never used or even heard of Dash before. I also did not have much experience in HTML or CSS. Browsing through countless tutorials allowed me to put together my current submission. Apart from technical difficulty, I also faced the challenge of synthesizing my web page content, summarizing the majority of the content myself. While difficult and not a normal task for a software developer, I enjoyed it thoroughly, because of my love for economics (almost as much as my love for computer science)!
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I am proud of myself for creating an application that I think is useful for a lot of people. Additionally, in such a short period of time, I was able to learn new skills and bring my ideas into fruition, creating both a webpage and a means to visualize meaningful data.
What I learned
I learned much more about web development and the Dash graphing library. I also learned a lot more about the economic situation we are in. Both of which is valuable knowledge.
What's next for Viro-Economics
I plan to continue my design and update the applications with more relevant information as the pandemic continues and new information becomes available (like quarterly GDP reports two days from now!)
